Popular actor-singer Piolo Jose Nonato Pascual, more popularly known as Piolo Pascual, was born on January 12, 1977 in Manila to German-Spanish Philip Victor Pascual and Filipina Amelia “Amy” Nonato Pascual. He is the youngest in a brood of six. Piolo lived a relatively simple life growing up. He Finished his grade school and high school at the St. Francis School in Santa Ana, Manila.
Pascual’s first taste of show business was on the teen variety show That’s Entertainment where he appeared as PJ Pascual. However, he have to quit the show after a year to focus on his studies when he took up AB General Education at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST). He later shifted to Physical Therapy to prepare for his family’s impending migration to the United States.
Pascual also tried his luck and passed auditions at the ABS-CBN Talent Center but almost missed being included in the Star Circle Batch 2 because he had to go to the US to deal with the petition his mom worked on for so long. After a few weeks, he came back just in time for the Star Circle Batch 2 launch and was given a six-month contract by ABS-CBN. He stayed for six months and had to go back to the US. There he worked in a hospital as an ER representative.
After a few years, manager Joji Dincong would urge Pascual to return to the Philippines as it was the best time to break into the scene. Pascual came home and was given a 5 year television/management contract and was reintroduced as Piolo Pascual with the help of Johnny Manahan Vice President for ABS-CBN Talent Center.
He was given mostly supporting roles but started to get noticed in Esperanza opposite Judy Ann Santos. His biggest break was in Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo Ako where he received an Asian TV Awards nomination for Best Drama Actor for his portrayal of the villain Raffy.
In the film Lagarista, Pascual was given the opportunity to shine and show his thespic skills. His performance as a man who delivers movie reels from one cinema to another earned him his first Gawad Urian nomination for Best Actor. The film was also highly praised in film festivals abroad.
He would later make other movies including the blockbuster hit Kahit Isang Saglit with Judy Ann Santos and Leandro Muñoz as well as the critically acclaimed film Dekada ’70 where his performance earned citations from major award-giving bodies including the Metro Manila Film Festival, FAMAS, Star Awards, and the prestigious Urian Award.
Other films that Pascual starred in include Mila, Bakit Di Totohanin, I think I’m In Love, Jologs, 9 Mornings, Till There Was You, Milan, Dreamboy, Don’t Give Up On Us, Paano Kita Iibigin, Love Me Again (Land Down Under), Manila, Every Breath U Take, 24/7 in Love and On The Job.
Starting Over Again, his latest film opposite Toni Gonzaga, was a huge success and is currently among the highest grossing Filipino film of all time.
On television, his popular works include Sa Puso Ko Iingatan Ka, Buttercup, Mangarap Ka, Sa Piling Mo, Walang Kapalit, Lobo, Lovers in Paris, Noah, Dahil Sa Pag-Ibig and Apoy Sa Dagat. He is reportedly starring in an upcoming teleserye, tentatively titled Hawak-Kamay, opposite his Starting Over Again co-star, Iza Calzado.
Apart from acting, Piolo is also a recording star and has a total of 3 best-selling albums under Star Records. He also worked behind the camera as producer of indie films Manila and Kimmy Dora.
Piolo has a teenage son named Iñigo Lazaro Pascual who was born and lives in California with his mother.
