Their team up spawned blockbuster movies and top-rating TV shows. They made you so kilig that you wished hard that they end up together in real life. Some of them did, but unfortunately parted ways eventually. You are so smitten by their chemistry that seeing them together on screen, even after years of "separation," gives you a certain kind of high. They are the Philippine's most enduring love teams and they will be forever etched in our hearts and in the annals of local show business.
Yes, we heard about Fernando Poe Jr. & Susan Roces, Tirso Cruz III & Nora Aunor, Bobot Mortiz & Vilma Santos and all the other tandems of yesteryear. But this list is about love teams that made a mark in our generation.
Gabby Concepcion & Sharon Cuneta
Their first movie together, Dear Heart, became an instant hit when it was shown in 1981. The film's success led to more collaborations and the on-screen romance became real. Sharon and Gabby were married in 1984 but separated after 3 years. They have a daughter, KC Concepcion. The two have long moved on and got married to their respective partners but have yet to be seen again in a full length movie together.
Richard Gomez & Dawn Zulueta
A reel and real romance that didn't end up to forever but remains to be a love team to reckon with in Philippine showbiz. They made us fall in love in 1991's Hihintayin Kita sa Langit and broke our hearts when they eventually broke up. Their reunion in 2012's hit series Walang Hanggan marked one of the most successful comebacks ever staged by a love team. Several reunion projects were planned but none materialized until this year's The Love Affair. The CharDawn love team is also slated to star in the upcoming Kapamilya teleserye You're My Home, which is set to premier later this year.
John Lloyd Cruz & Bea Alonzo
They never became a real life item but the John Lloyd Cruz-Bea Alonzo tandem is one of the most bankable love teams in the country today. Their collaborations included some of the highest-grossing Filipino films of all time. According to the grapevine, the two are set to team up in a new movie soon.
Piolo Pascual & Judy Ann Santos
Their on-screen chemistry was first noticed in the TV series Esperanza, which led to more collaborations both on television and the movies. It's been almost a decade since their last film project together but the two stars revealed in recent interviews that they are both open for a reunion project.
Rico Yan and Claudine Barretto
Their on and off screen romance started in Mula Sa Puso, one of the most successful soap operas on local TV. They continued to star in other TV shows and movies, including the blockbuster hit Got 2 Believe, which would be Rico's last film before his death in March 29, 2002.
Jericho Rosales & Kristine Hermosa
Their love team is not only popular in the Philippines but also in other parts of the world due to the massive success of their soap opera, Pangako Sa'yo, which was and is still being shown in such countries as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapor, Namibia and Kenya.
Marvin Agustin & Jolina Magdangal
This well-loved tandem started in the teen-oriented TV series Gimik in 1996 and continued to entertain with their undeniable chemistry in other TV shows and movies. They left the Kapamilya network to try greener pastures but were welcomed with open arms when they returned after a few years. Today, they are enjoying renewed popularity as they once again pair up in the hit afternoon soap opera, Flordeliza.
Gerald Anderson & Kim Chiu
Kimerald, as they are lovingly called by fans, rose to fame as teen housemates in the reality TV show Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition in 2006. Kim was named the big winner while Gerald placed third. After PBB, they were paired in several TV sitcoms and rom-com flicks and officially became an item. They figured in an ugly break up in 2010 but fans are still hoping for a reunion in the near future.
Daniel Padilla & Kathryn Bernardo
Kathniel is the most popular love team of their generation. The teen stars were catapulted to fame when they starred in the 2012 hit series, Princess And I. Their immense popularity led to more collaborations on both TV and films, all of which are well-received. Their current series, the remake of the hit 2000 teleserye, Pangako Sa 'Yo, is a top rater.
Enrique Gil & Liza Soberano
LizQuen first worked together in the Bea Alonzo starrer, She's the One in 2013. They didn't quite make a mark as a love team until they were tapped to star in 2014's hit teleserye, Forevermore. After the series, the two were paired anew in the film Just The Way You Are which marked their first ever starring roles as a movie love team.
James Reid & Nadine Lustre
With 3 blockbuster hit movies and a top-rating teleserye under its belt, the JaDine love team definitely belongs in this list. They both started in show business early (9-year-old Nadine hosted a kiddie show while James entered the PBB house and went out as the big winner when he was 17) but didn't quite make it big until they were tapped to star in the 2014 rom-com Diary ng Panget. The rest is history and they continue to make us kilig every night via their first telelserye, On The Wings Of Love.
Alden Richards & Maine Mendoza
A love team "accidentally" formed on Eat Bulaga's Juan For All, All for Juan segment. Both virtually unknown before the AlDub phenomenon, Alden and Yaya Dub (Maine) are now household names. What's surprising is their palpable onscreen chemistry when they haven't even met each other in person yet. As expected, the show's producer is milking the AlDub love team for all its worth. Taking advantage of the unlikely tandem's new-found fame, interested parties are leaving no stones unturned for a spin off TV show and movie for the popular duo, says a reliable source. Is AlDub just a flash in the pan or can they prove their mettle in their own show or movie? Let's wait and see.
