Controversial actress/host Kris Aquino took to Instagram to express her adulation and support for her brother and Philippine President Benigno Aquino III who has been been receiving flak for his alleged lack of action regarding Mary Jane Veloso’s plight as a drug-trafficking convict scheduled for execution in Indonesia.
On her Instagram, the Queen of All Media posted on Wednesday afternoon a collage of the day’s newspaper headlines announcing Veloso’s reprieve, including a photo of her brother and Indonesian Persident Joko Widodo. In the caption, the presidential sister said she “kept quiet and just prayed” amidst criticisms against her brother for allegedly not exerting enough effort to help Veloso.
Aquino added that God must have heard the Filipinos’ collective prayer. She also revealed that the president asked her to keep silent about the criticisms but due to today’s good news, she’s exercising her right and privilege to say that she’s proud of her brother.
I kept quiet & just prayed. Left & right paulit ulit na walang ginawa, walang effort, walang malasakit, patalsikin, walang nagawa si Noynoy. (Thank You Manila Bulletin for the accurate front page.) Our whole family prayed, of course for Mary Jane and her family, but I prayed deeply for the Holy Spirit to guide my brother & his government to find a way to spare the life of a fellow Filipino. To find a reason compelling enough for the Indonesian govt to give Mary Jane Veloso a reprieve, and it came because of testimony regarding the greater problem of HUMAN TRAFFICKING. I prayed for God to bless our relations w/ Indonesia… Australia, Brazil, Nigeria, and even an Indonesian died by firing squad. From the New York Times I quote: “Saying Indonesia had a right to exercise its drug laws, Mr Joko’s govt. rejected international pleas to cancel the executions, including from Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nation.” I firmly believe that we must respect the laws of each country, and as Filipinos we will take offense when other countries will dictate upon us… But we are a God fearing, faithful nation. And He heard our collective prayer. And I kept quiet w/ the endless attacks against PNoy because that was his reminder to me, but today it is my right & my privilege to say, I AM PROUD of my brother. I AM PROUD OF MY PRESIDENT. 🇵🇭
Veloso was convicted of drug trafficking in Indonesia and all appeals by the Philippine government to review her case were rejected. She was scheduled for execution by firing squad early Wednesday morning along with eight other convicts from different countries. All the other convicts were executed as scheduled except for Veloso.
According to Indonesia’s Attorney General, Veloso was spared after President Aquino’s appeal that she must live as she is a valuable witness in the impending case against her recruiter and alleged human trafficker who has recently surrendered to authorities.
