Soap Opera Queen Judy Ann Santos has decided not to star in the upcoming horror flick, Maria, Leonora, Teresa, and the CineMalaya 2014 entry, Mariquina. According to reports, Santos opted to wait for a different project than work on the horror film from Star Cinema.
Iza Calzado will take the role left by Santos. Also in the cast are Jodi Sta. Maria and Zanjoe Marudo. While Maria, Leonora, Teresa is about dolls that come to life, the movie has nothing to do with the similarly-named doll popularized by the Nora Aunor-Tirso Cruz III love team in the 70s. It will be directed by the blockbuster director Wenn Deramas.
Meanwhile, Santos released an official statement explaining why she backed out from Mariquina, a supposed entry to the New Breed category of the indie film festival. The actress cited “casting changes that resulted in scheduling conflicts” as the reason behind her decision. Other cast members, namely, Angel Aquino, Agot Isidro and Joel Torre have earlier backed out of the project. Santos’ full statement reads as follows:
“Due to casting changes that resulted in scheduling conflicts, Ms. Judy Ann Santos is no longer available to play d role of Imelda in d Cinemalaya New Breed film Mariquina. Judy Ann, her camp, director Milo Sogueco and the producers have talked & all parties have reached an understandng. Team Mariquina & Ms Judy Ann wish each other well, & still hope to work with each other in the future.”
As the title implies, Mariquina is set in the country’s shoe-making capital, Marikina City. Award-winning filmmaker Jerrold Tarog wrote the screenplay while Milo Sogueco directs. The 10th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival will be held on August 1-10, 2014 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
